Description

The Soviets had been on the receiving end of the new German 7.92mm kurz round in the hands of the Wehrmacht late in WW2 much more so than the Western Allies, and the Red Army quickly realized the value in developing their own intermediate cartridge and arm. Mikhail Kalashnikov's designed select-fire rifle was adopted in 1947, chambered for the new Russian 7.62x39mm round, and featuring a long stroke gas piston, large capacity curved mag, swept back pistol grip, and sturdy wooden furniture. The Kalashnikov was an instant classic, a forgiving, reliable weapon that needed only a modicum of maintenance or training to operate; it contained few moving parts, could be field stripped in short order, and even if dropped in mud, sand, or snow would almost never refuse to feed or fire. Its simple design and Soviet penchant for mass production meant tens of millions of Kalashnikov rifles were produced from its inception to the fall of the USSR in 1991. It was also manufactured in huge quantities by the Chinese, and thousands were liberally supplied to the NVA and VC during Vietnam. The Kalashnikov has been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading Joe Poyer to write an informative technical guide/reference book on the subject in 2004, revised and expanded into a fourth edition in 2013. This "KALASHNIKOV RIFLES" SOVIET RUSSIAN POST-WW2 CHINESE NVA VIETNAM REFERENCE BOOK is in near mint, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in near mint shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts elegantly illustrated softcovers, and sports 190 pages full of descriptive text, period pictures, diagrams, and black and white photographs (as well as two color plates) of the Kalashnikov rifle of the Cold War era produced by Soviet Russia, China (Type 56), Bulgaria, Egypt, East Germany, Hungary, Iraq, North Korea, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia, in addition to derivatives such as the Israeli Galil, Finnish Valmet, Czech vz.58, and Soviet SVD Dragunov sniper rifle, with an emphasis on butt stocks (both fixed and folding), forends, hand guards, butt plates, receivers, bolts, trigger assemblies, sights, barrels, manufacturer's markings, serial numbers, telescopic sights, mags, bayonets, scabbards, cleaning kits, oilers, ammo, pouches, and bandoliers, precise measurements and correct details to look for in all of those parts, and a plethora of other invaluable information.
