Description
This artifact is a 1960's era German made Beer stein (Porzellankrug) with lid and was a gift to then-Major General General John K. Hester. The Beer Stein was made in Bonn, Germany by a man named Phil Jost. It is marked with a date of 11 December 1964.
The porcelain and the lid are in good condition. The metal armature connecting the lid to the handle seems to be sturdy and intact. The lid also seems to have little to no patina or wear save for the figurine aircraft which is slightly bent.
The different Air Force Emblems featured are of the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing, the 17th Air Force (of which Hester was the Commanding General at that time), and the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. There is a gold dedication along with more embellishments in paint with Hester's name, rank, event date, and purpose.
The art on the mug of the different squadrons is also intact and shows no sign of chipping or wear. The silhouette lithophane of a woman is still visible at the bottom of the glass. The bottom rim of the porcelain seems to have yellow discoloring although it is possible this is simply dirt and could be wiped away. We leave that to the buyer!
This artifact is part of an extensive lot that has been entrusted to Heritage Arsenal for consignment by the family of Major General John K. Hester and has not previously been resident in any collection or museum.
