The name "Deruta" comes from the beautiful medieval town of Deruta in Umbria, Italy, where this particular technique and style of ceramic originated.
How did this small village town in a remote area of Italy become so famous worldwide? Simply for the beauty, expertise and creativity of the Italian artisans who for centuries passed down their knowledge to their sons and scholars, making it one of the most noble and ancient centers of ceramic production.
Each piece, in fact, is not only hand made but also hand painted , therefore its imitation and copy is quite difficult if not impossible.
We cannot say for sure when its production actually started. Even though some people say that it traces back to the Roman era, the first paper in which was documented an exchange of money for some ceramic jars goes back to 1290. Its flourishing production, though, peaked only in the 16th century, ranging from plates , nobility coat of arms, cups, decorative examples and even the pavement of the Church of St. Francis.
With time the production of Deruta majolica was also influenced by famous painters such as Perugino, Tintoretto and many others. During the centuries, in fact, not only the techniques transitioned from lustreware to polychrome but also the motifs and subjects changed from mythological to religious to floral and so on.
Nowadays Deruta is still considered synonym of beauty, high quality and most refined ceramic all over the word and many local workshops keep producing these beautiful pieces still with the same passion and expertise that characterized their forebears.
This plate is a gorgeous example of authentic Deruta ceramic.
Originally produced in Deruta by a local workshop, as certified by the label placed on its reverse side, this piece of art is hand made and hand painted in gold and it presents a portrayal of the holy spirit cross with two doves in a byzantine mosaic motive.

Does it come with a COA (certificate of authenticity) ?
An official certificate or documentation for the public audiences' blessing
does not exist!
It would be impossible in fact for the Holy Father Pope Francis to sign one for each pilgrim attending an audience as we are talking about thousands of people.
That said we always include a small card on which is mentioned that the item has been blessed by Pope Francis at his public audience held in Rome but that it is not an official COA released by the Vatican.

How will I know that my item has been blessed?
We send a member of our staff every Wednesday and Sunday to attend a general audience. If you need proof we can provide you with a
complete set of pictures
showing Saint Peter's Basilica , your order with your name on it , Pope Francis and a zoomed image of the Holy Father from the wide screens. In addition we will also upload , upon request, a video of the moment in which the Pope imparts the apostolic blessing on Dropbox.

If an official COA doesn't exist can I still have a pope blessing certificate or document from the Vatican?
Yes of course!
The
only official certificate/document released by the Vatican is the personal pope blessing certificate. You can order it directly at the Vatican or we can do it for you. It will have your name or that of your loved ones on it plus papal seal , date and signature of the Archbishop Konrad Krajewski , the papal Almoner appointed by Pope Francis.
